And when is it coming?
A major internet speed upgrade is coming to Australia in 2026. It’s the new NBN 2000! Also known as Hyperfast internet. The plan is to go live in September 2026. This tier will offer download speeds of up to 2000 Mbps. This will be the fastest internet available to-date.
While this is great news for households, it’s also a win for micro-businesses, startups, solo operators and work-from-home professionals. Whether you’re running a creative agency from your spare room, managing eCommerce from your kitchen table, or launching a SaaS product from your garage, NBN 2000 could offer the kind of performance that takes your operations to the next level.
Let’s take a look at NBN 2000.
How fast is NBN 2000, and why does it matter for small businesses
NBN 2000 plans will deliver download speeds up to 2000 Mbps (2 Gbps). That’s twice as fast as today’s NBN 1GB plan. And more than 20 times faster than a standard NBN 100 plan.
For small businesses, this new speed means:
- Faster cloud backups and syncs. Cutting wait times for file uploads and reducing downtime.
- Faster video conferencing. Even with multiple users on calls at the same time.
- More efficient collaboration, with real-time editing, large file sharing, and faster software updates.
Upload speeds will depend on your connection type:
- FTTP (Fibre to the Premises): up to 200 Mbps
- HFC (Hybrid Fibre Coaxial): up to 100 Mbps
For businesses that need even more upstream capacity (e.g. for hosting, livestreaming, or remote access tools), a business-grade version of NBN 2000 will be available, offering up to 500 Mbps upload.
When is NBN 2000 launching?
The official launch date is September 14, 2026. On the same day, several existing speed tiers will also be upgraded:
- NBN 100 plans will increase to 500 Mbps download
- NBN 250 plans will increase to 750 Mbps download
- NBN 1000 plans will keep their current 1,000 Mbps download, but upload speeds will double from 50 Mbps to 100 Mbps
These changes are part of NBN Co’s wider effort to modernise Australia’s broadband and make it more suited to future digital demands for both homes and businesses.
What will NBN 2000 cost?
The wholesale price for NBN 2000 is set at $115 per month, around $40 more than NBN 1000’s wholesale cost. While retail pricing hasn’t been finalised, plans are expected to range from $150 to $200 per month, depending on your provider and whether you’re on a residential or business-grade service.
For small businesses already investing in business internet or multiple services, this could be a cost-effective way to consolidate and scale up performance.
Who can get NBN 2000?
Initially, NBN 2000 will only be available to premises connected via:
- Fibre to the Premises (FTTP)
- Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC)
That means businesses on FTTN (Fibre to the Node), FTTC (Fibre to the Curb), or other legacy technologies won’t have access right away. Check your address on NBN Co’s website to find out what you’re on.
However, NBN Co’s fibre upgrade program is still ongoing. Here’s how to become eligible:
- If you’re on FTTN, you need to upgrade to at least an NBN 100 plan
- If you’re on FTTC, you’ll need an NBN 250 plan
Once you’ve switched to a qualifying plan with a provider (such as Swoop), NBN Co will upgrade your connection to FTTP at no extra cost.
What small businesses should consider
For small businesses, the new NBN 2000 could be a game-changer. Here’s why.
- Productivity boost. Cloud-based apps and services will run faster and more reliably, improving workflow and reducing lag time.
- Better customer experience. Businesses offering remote services, support, or virtual consultations can provide smoother, higher-quality interactions.
- Support for hybrid work. If your team works remotely or across multiple locations, NBN 2000 can make collaboration much easier.
- Future readiness. More speed means you’re better prepared for upcoming technologies like AI-driven tools, large-scale video production, or smart office automation.
What if you’re not eligible yet?
If you’re currently on FTTN or FTTC, you might not be eligible for NBN 2000 just yet – but you can trigger a free upgrade to FTTP by switching to a qualifying plan. Visit NBN Co’s website to check your address and see your upgrade options.
If you’re already on FTTP or HFC, keep an eye out for pre-orders or early access offers from your provider in the lead-up to the September 2026 launch.
NBN 2000 has real potential for small businesses that rely on fast, stable internet to stay competitive.
Keen for this upgrade? Check your connection type, explore faster plans, and make sure your networking gear is ready to handle gigabit speeds or more.
Key takeaways
- The NBN 2000 speed tier, launching in September 2026, will provide download speeds of up to 2000 Mbps.
- The upgrade will also enhance existing NBN plans, with NBN 100 increasing to 500 Mbps and NBN 250 to 750 Mbps. NBN 1000 will maintain its speed but double its upload rates.
- Small businesses currently on FTTN or FTTC can upgrade to FTTP for free by switching to qualifying plans, ensuring they can access the new speed tier when it becomes available.
