“Will I still be able to open windows with interior Plantation Shutters installed? This is one of the most commonly asked questions by some customers. The answer is simply ‘Yes’. For the windows which slide up and down or left and right, plantation shutters will not get in the way of opening function. If the windows can crank out or tilt in for cleaning, one can still open and operate their windows. But, it is important to select the right mount for your shutters to avoid blocking the functions. In this blog let us discuss some considerations to be followed while installing plantation shutters:
Plantation shutters for windows opening inwards
If you have a window which tilts in, an inside mount shutter frame could block the full operation of your windows. Some customers prefer the look of an inside mount shutter frame and will waive the functionality. However, if the frame is cleverly fitted outside, then you can open your windows to keep its tilt in function. The frame fitted outside attaches to the wall or trims bordering your window which allows you to open the entire shutter frame as the frame will be outside the window recess and makes the operation full and easy.
Plantation shutters for windows that crank outward
For casement windows which have a crank mechanism to open the windows, the easiest way to install plantation shutters is with an outside mount. The outward crank windows have bordering trim/mould around them. For installation, you can mount the shutter frame directly on top of the trim or can use the shutter frame alternatively to trim around the window opening. By using this way of installing the shutter frame with an outside mount, you can get full access to reach the crank handle and will be able to operate the locks which require enough space as they are typically designed lever style to lift it upwards in order to unlock the window.
Additionally, this doesn’t mean that an inside mount will not be possible for a casement window. The other consideration that can be made is to print the frame templates with the use of a mount measuring guide to place them inside the window casing, which ensures that the cranked window is not blocked and you have enough space in front of the crank mechanism to use the lock feature.
Other general considerations for window handles or locks
An outside mount frame can be used when there is a limited space inside the window opening as the shutter frame could potentially block your access to reach the handle or lock to open your window. On the other hand if the window depth is sufficient for your chosen slat size, you can choose frameless panels for installation although it is not advisable for larger windows.
