- Posture and angles:
Extend your neck a little and tilt your face just a bit. You should not slouch. If you are standing, keep your shoulders stretched back and rest your weight on your back leg. If the photographer is shorter than you, then you need to ensure that the camera lens is above you.
- Facial expressions matter the most:
Try to naturally laugh or smile. Your tongue should be behind your teeth. Look slightly above the lens. For candid shots, try looking away from the camera and keep a few natural expressions on your face. Candid shots are more attractive than traditional ‘Smmmmmmiiiilllllleeee’ kind of photos with a forced smiles on face.
- Eyes:
The most powerful elements are the eyes. Engaging your eyes while holding a pose is the tough thing. So, you can close your eyes and then open them a second before the click. You can also look away and then look to the camera just before it clicks. Face your eyes towards the light source. Stand in shade and face the lights. If you are doing an indoor shoot, then face a window or door from where the light is coming.
- Clothes:
Wear a colour that cajoles you. Don’t wear the clothes having more patterns or hazy colours which will distract from your photo. Make sure that your clothes are not wrinkled or bunched up.
- Background:
You should aim for a suitable background that can suit you and the colour of your clothes as well. If you have a dark black hairs then you should avoid standing in a dark background. Keep in mind what is behind you. Your facial expressions should also match the background. Try not to look too rigid or stiff.
- Use props wisely:
Do something with your hands and use the props wisely. Props will help you not look tired and flat, but make you look more energetic and engaging with the background.
