Referring to the electric scooter laws imposed by the government, one e-scooter owner rejoined, “(The new law in Queensland) is intended for the good of the rider, and in a broad sense, to protect both the owners/users and the passerby or the public. You know, from possible accidents or mishaps.”

The various electric scooter laws passed in different states where PMD’s (personal micromobile devices) were allowed to be ridden by electric scooter owners, having met with full understanding and conformity by the electric scooter community.

Road rules, traffic regulations, limitations – they were established to put order on things. To avoid trouble from happening – if followed diligently, consciously. With new speed limits for e-scooter riders in Queensland on the horizon, the government has outlined the fine structure for those doing the wrong thing.

The intent is not to bruise or maim the enjoyment of the riders, but to impress accountability. Yeah, sure it’s going to hurt. Who gets hurt? Those who refuse blatantly, those who deliberately ignore, those who defy the norms of responsibly riding an e-scooter.

Isn’t this the same with riding a four-wheeled vehicle, whether it is a jeep, truck, SUV, or bus? The driver is required to have successfully passed driving lessons, memorized road signs and traffic rules, have an active license, use a seatbelt, his airbag in order, before he is allowed to ride and navigate the steering wheel?

Case in point: drivers of vehicles who obey, follow, comply with traffic, road regulations, speed limit, need not worry about the arm of the law seizing their license or getting fined, or be taken to jail. Well, it’s the same for law-abiding electric scooter riders, as they are clearly mature and responsible owners.

So guess who gets hit, who suffers the consequence of reckless, irresponsible actions? Who gets penalized, sanctioned, or worse, who goes to court and gets jailed? It cannot be reiterated too much. Following, not cutting corners or disregarding the laws imposed by the government must be the order of the day. Every day. Safety. It is everybody’s concern. Because it is everyone’s right.

The rider has this unalienable right to ride, to drive. The bystander, passerby, commuter also have this right to a safe pass. It cannot be that a rider can and will do what he wants, anytime he wants to, without regard for the wellbeing and safety of others.

To disregard and ignore set regulations by authorities is outright disrespect for a person’s right – to be safe. To feign ignorance is inexcusable, because so-called ignorance exempts no one, and as such, shall be subject to legal consequences. A scrape, a bruise, an injury whether minor, or that which causes serious damage or unfortunate loss of life holds the culprit responsible. The harm and injury caused to the victim will not go unpunished. This is where the full weight of the law is put into effect. This might be leading to a deep discussion that can spark controversial issues. But for what it’s worth, the issue is about life. Precious life.

The rider’s life depends on it. The unsuspecting bystander’s life depends on it. The vehicle driver’s life depends on it. Helter skelter isn’t done. It violates the very essence of what a good life is. Yours and mine.

You want to enjoy something good, you have to be prepared to do something equally good, to get it.

Electric scooters are a great news to commuters. Really huge help to beat traffic woes. They are fast, easy to maneuver and navigate, portable and compact, environment-friendly, great for health too. So long as one complies with the law, then no trouble is to be expected.
